Job opportunities in the UK

According to the annual Global Skills Index from recruitment group Hays and consultancy Oxford Economics, skill shortages in the UK have worsened for a fourth consecutive year, and now rank among the most severe in Europe.

The engineering and technology sector is particularly affected, with employers virtually forced into a ‘war for talent’.

The report calls for regulatory and immigration reform as a short-term route to enable businesses to access world class talent from outside their domestic markets.

If your skills are in demand in the UK, finding a job may be easier. The UK Skill Shortage List details the professions in the UK that are in exceptionally high demand. Being a professional in one of these occupations means swifter entry into the UK via the Tier 2 “Skilled Worker Visa’ on the points-based system.

They include production managers and directors in mining and energy, civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, IT business analysts, architects, medical practitioners, nurses, secondary education teaching professionals, medical and dental technicians, and skilled dancers, choreographers and musicians.

We’ve listed a few current positions in some of the UK’s main cities that fit the criteria. You can click on the job title links for more information.
