More Brits should consider studying abroad

A survey carried out on 750 British students last year found that more than half were considering studying abroad.

While the majority of these students were looking to continue their studies abroad due to “extortionate” UK tuition fees, there are a number of other reasons why choosing to study abroad can be one of the most enlightening decisions that you will ever make.

If you have a strong sense of adventure and you want the opportunity to experience a new place, studying abroad might be the perfect option for you. Here are some of the most compelling reasons to at least consider whether studying abroad is for you.

Broaden your mind

It is often said that travel broadens the mind. When travelling, we experience other people and places in a way that we otherwise wouldn’t. As a student, you will gain an even more unique perspective on the country you choose to study in. Being a student is not like being a holidaymaker; students live in their country of study for a number of years.

Certain subjects, such as history and architecture, will bring you closer to the country you study in and will allow you to experience your chosen subject in a completely new way. If you are planning on studying a language, or cultural studies, immersing yourself fully in the country and its culture will enhance your subject in a unique way.

High quality accommodation

If you plan it right, studying abroad can be like an extended holiday in which you also earn a degree. It will be hard work, of course, but being in a foreign country doesn’t have to be an uncomfortable experience. For example, if you are considering heading to Portugal, you will find plenty of options for student accommodation in Coimbra, Lisbon and Porto from providers such as Collegiate. If you are looking for luxury student accommodation in Coimbra, for example, Collegiate have plenty of self-contained apartments within walking distance of the university and plenty of student friendly attractions.

If you are uneasy about making the move to a foreign country, knowing that you will be moving into comfortable and luxurious accommodation can make a big difference. Many people feel more confident about studying abroad when they know that they will be moving into high quality student accommodation.

Learn another language

Moving to another country is the best way of learning the local language. By exposing yourself to the language on a daily basis and immersing yourself in it entirely, you will pick up on the nuances that you only get from native speakers. Once you graduate, being able to speak another language will open up a number of doors to you that would otherwise be unavailable. As you progress through your studies, be on the lookout for any networking opportunities where your bilingual abilities might set you ahead of other applicants.

Studying abroad is an excellent way of experiencing the wider world and gaining a perspective on things that you would otherwise miss out on. Whether you are looking to enhance your degree by experiencing a relevant country first hand, or you simply want to experience something new and unexpected, studying abroad is the perfect route to take.

No matter what subject you are studying, make sure that you consider what opportunities are on offer abroad.
